Vertra Sunscreen Announces 2010 Battle of the Paddle Team

The 2010 Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle is set for an enormous turn out at Doheny Beach, California. With top paddlers hailing from around the globe, this weekend’s event is anticipated to be the most competitive and exciting event of the year.  As athletes make last minute preparations for the elite surf race, distance and relay events, Vertra Suncare has announced this year’s paddlesports Battle Team!

Danny Ching (California):  The 2010 Battle of the Paddle Hawaii overall champion. Winning not only the Elite Surf Race, Ching championed the Distance downwind race as well as the 4-person relay!

Travis Grant (Australia):  The talented paddler out of Australia, Grant came on the SUP scene, last year in Hawaii, by taking an impressive and decisive 2^nd Place finish behind fellow teammate Danny Ching!

John Becker (California): A force to be reckon with in both flat and surf conditions. Taking down paddlers half his age, he is fearsome and dominant paddler.

Matt Becker (California): The young Matt Becker, seemingly gets faster and stronger each time he races. Finishing in a top 10 position at the Battle of the Battle in Hawaii, young Becker is a top contender for this year’s crown!

Riggs Napoleon (Hawaii): At 12 years of age, this young Hawaiian has awed and earned the respect of his friends, family and fellow competitors. Completing the 32-mile Molokai to Oahu SUP solo channel crossing Riggs is out to have fun and prove himself in this year’s event.

Aaron Napoleon (Hawaii): Fearsome competitor in the water, Aaron is a true ocean athlete inside and out. Aaron hasn’t missed a BOP yet.  At the inaugural BOP Aaron placed 3^rd overall and the following year placed 6^th in the elite surf race.  At the Battle this year in Hawaii, Aaron returned to the front of the pack by placing 3^rd once again.

Morgan Hoestry (Hawaii): Morgan was a key component in the Destination 3 Degrees she took part in earlier this year.  A project which included her and one other female crossing all of the Major Hawaiian Channels on a SUP board.  A strong force both in short and distance racing, she placed 5^th overall at the Battle of the Paddle Hawaii.

The Battle of the Paddle event series has become an iconic event in the paddling community.  This event houses the best paddlers in the world competing for a years worth of bragging rights. In front of thousands of spectators Saturday and Sunday will be a weekend to remember at Doheny Beach.  “We have a tight niche group of elite athletes,” commented Vertra President Bobby Higa. “We are all excited to see how they race this weekend.” The Vertra paddlesports team performed second to none at the Battle of the Paddle Hawaii, we look forward to continuing in the same fashion at this weekend’s event.

The 2010 Battle of the Paddle California is predicting record setting numbers this comming Saturday and Sunday at Dohney State Park. The worlds best Standup Paddling athletes will be arrving and preparing for an exciting weekend of elite surf, distance and relay races.

Team Bradley Primo gears for 2010 Na Wahine O Ke Kai!

Team Bradley Primo gears up for the 2010 Na Wahine O Ke Kai canoe race. Beginning at Halo O Lono Harbor this Sunday, athletes will cross the Molokai Channel and finish in Waikiki on 6-man outrigger canoes. Team Bradley Primo, the reigning champs will once again take to the channel to defend their title! 

The reigning world champions will be protected by Vertra: Elemental Resistance Sunscreen for their crossing. "It's the best stuff, and the sunscreen actually works," commented teammate Lauren Bartlett. Come down to the finish to support team Bradley Primo and other crews this Sunday at Fort De Russy, Waikiki.

Australia’s Travis Grant Joins Forces with Vertra: Elemental Resistance Sunscreen

Honolulu, Hi (September, 21 2010)  Vertra: Elemental Resistance Sunscreen is proud to welcome Australian ocean force Travis Grant to the paddlesports team. Born and raised on the Gold Coast, Grant spent his youth at the local surf lifesaving clubs competing on nipper boards, paddleboards and surfskis. “I grew up near the beach,” commented Grant “and when you live near the beach in Australia your involved in surf lifesaving.” Whether it was the youthful years of playing in the shore break surf on the Gold Coast beaches or a mixed culmination of natural ability, Grant’s knowledge and skills as an ocean athlete has allowed him his success in the various paddling disciplines. 

In 2004, Grant began his assault on the world paddling stage. Choosing an OC1 as his primary weapon, Grant quickly found success, winning the Catalina Relay in 2005. In 2007 Grant teamed with the Team New Zealand Hawaii in the Molokai Hoe race, finishing in an impressive 3^rd place finish. 

As the standup paddleboarding began its rise in the paddling world, Travis was amongst the many elite canoe paddlers who made the transition. 2009 marked the first time Grant entered an SUP race, winning three consecutive big races in Australia. “When SUP came along, it was a familiar transition form the OC1” commented Grant. It was in 2010 that Grant made his mark on the standup paddle community by competing top notch at the Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle Hawaii. Grant paddled to an impressive 2^nd place finish in the Elite Race behind fellow Vertra Sunscreen and 404 teammate Danny Ching. “He’s an amazingly talented paddler on any craft he touches,” commented Ching. On the same weekend, Grant was also a member of the SUP winning relay team. 

Humble and dedicated, Travis is a true ocean athlete to the core. “I look forward to a competitive and fun year of racing all type of watercrafts,” commented Grant.  Please help Vertra: Elemental Resistance welcome Travis Grant to the team.

Vertra Sunscreen’s Team at the 2010 Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race

Catalina, CA (August, 26) The 2010 Catalina Classic Paddleboard race kicks off this Sunday at Two Harbors. The 32-mile course will begin at the Isthmus and cross the Catalina Channel and end at Manhattan Pier. This will be the 35th annual crossing of the event with just over 100 athletes entered. This race is unique in that it is solely a prone paddlers race, which paddlers can either choose to paddle a 12 ft. (20 pound) "stock board" or an "unlimited board" in which anything goes.

Vertra's Paddlesports team will be well covered and racing in this years event. Brian Rocheleau a top Hawaiian paddler will be making his way over from the warm pacific to race. As a consistent top 3 finisher at the Molokai World Championships of paddleboarding, he will be a contender for this year’s trophy. "I am excited to make it over," commented Rocheleau. "It's a big race with lots of history, the Californians come out to Hawaii for our race, so well come over for theirs." The unlimited field looks competitive this year, with many new and old faces showing up once again to test their skills and endurance in the channel.

Other Vertra paddlers to make the trip to Catalina will be Brian's brother Mark Rocheleau paddling an unlimited board and Eric Abbott paddling on a stock board.

Ching, Becker perform well at the 2010 Ta-Hoe Nalu SUP Event

Lake Tahoe, CA (August, 24^th 2010) In windy, cold and over-cast conditions, paddlers at the 2010 Ta-Hoe Nalu SUP event still took to the water. As the weather service predicted, a summer storm brewed on the lake resulting in consistent 25 MPH wind gusts. The event coordinators decided that the Elite SUP race would be run in a similar fashion to the world renowned Battle of the Paddle event. Athletes participating in the elite event were required to paddle .5 miles straight upwind, turn 180 degrees on the Quiksilver buoy, and surf their way back to the beach for a 100 yard beach run. This course was completed four times. As one of the premiere paddling events at Lake Tahoe, Vertra’s Paddlesports Team performed top notch!

Vertra’s own Danny Ching paddled to an impressive and comfortable 1^st place finish in the men’s elite SUP race taking home 2500$. In his normal fashion Ching got out to an early lead, and built the gap on the rest of the field on each turn. “I just went out hard, and tried to hold on,” commented Ching. Danny is considered by his peers as being one of the sports best and is second to none in paddling in all types of weather conditions. This weekends 25 MPH wind gusts proved to be no different as he powered his way up wind, and used his surfing knowledge from years of paddling the OC1 to build a sizable lead on the rest of the competitors.

The young sixteen-year-old Matt Becker battled his way in the top of the pack throughout the entire race. “It was tough to push it up wind,” commented Becker. Matt who just returned back to the States after a SUP surf expedition in Colombia found the best parks of the race surfing the .5 mile downwind leg of the race. “It was a great event today, a good starting point as I prepare for the Hennessey’s International Race and Battle of the Paddle in a few months.”
