Proper Suncare, is proper Skincare, and to take proper care of your skin, you have to take the enitre process seriously. When we Started Vertra Elemental Resistance in 2004, we vowed to do just that, to make a serious push and bring skincare awareness to the forefront of our market because until now, it has basically been a category that has been mostly taken for granted. Our Athletes that participate in the paddlesports industry are amongst the most prolific candidates to suffer from sunburn, skin damage, photo-aging and unfortunately in many cases, skin cancer. SIMPLY PUT, quality suncare products for people like us are not an accessory, but a necessity!

Vertra Sunscreen Well Represented at 2011 Koa Nui Championships!

Vertra Sunscreen Well Represented at 2011 Koa Nui Championships!

Pat Dolan
Honolulu, HAWAII—This weekend’s Koa Nui Championships may be the most competitive of its four year history. The two day, three-stage race presented by the Paddling Athletes Association (PA’A) is considered to be the all-around Oahu coastal championships with races ranging from sprints and mid-distance to a longer, 18 mile finale. This year, some of the world’s best paddlers, including last year’s Molokai Solo Champion, California’s Danny Ching, will gather to compete for the prestigious Koa Nui crown.

Last year’s crown, which is determined by cumulative point standings of each stage, was a heroic battle between second place Molokai Solo finisher Jimmy Austin and Olympic hopeful Patrick Dolan, which came down to their placing in the final leg. This year’s competition will run much deeper with rumors of attendance from 2010 Molokai Solo winner Danny Ching, the two-time Koa Nui Champ Kai Bartlett and up and coming phenom—Will Reichenstien.
While differing in format, the Koa Nui Championships is somewhat considered a warm-up for next month’s PA’A Molokai Solo, known as  the World Championships in solo canoe paddling. The three varying distances make it anyone’s race as National Kayaking Team sprinter and reigning 2010 Koa Nui Champion Patrick Dolan could easily find competition from flat-water specialist Danny Ching and last weekend’s winner Will Reichenstein. If the trades return, the battle through the surf will be between O’ahu favorite Jimmy Austin and Maui’s Kai Bartlett.
“The Koa Nui Champs are a different race than the longer, marathon-like Molokai Solo, but in terms of competition it’s a good opportunity to see what you’ll be up against in the channel,” said last year’s runner up Jimmy Austin. “Danny mainly trains in California, and Kai is on Maui, so this is the sort of the first and last chance to race these guys until the (Molokai) solo.”
Patrick Dolan, will attempt to defend his title and compete this weekend having not trained in an OC-1 at all season due to his rigorous National Kayaking Team schedule.
“It’s more of a fun race for me because I haven’t been in a canoe in a while,” said Dolan, who has been racing (and winning) in the surfski division this season. “I’m just stoked come out and see where I stack up against these guys.”
For the women, defending and undefeated Koa Nui champion, Maui’s Lauren Bartlett, will return to face off against O’ahu season favorite Lori Nakamura.
The first stage starts on Saturday Mar. 5, in Hawaii Kai as competitors take laps in the Marina fronting Kona Brewing Co. Immediately following, participants load up their boats and head to Makai Pier for and 8 mile run back to the Shack Hawaii Kai. On Sunday, competitors head back to Makai Pier for an 18-mile downwind run into the Anuenue Canoe Club site, inside the Hilton Lagoon.
The Koa Nui Schedule is as follows:
COURSE:
Saturday March 5th — Stage I and Stage II
9:15am - Long and Short courses Hawaii Kai Marina Stage I sprint time trial (~10-20 min).
11:15am - Stage II Long Course Makapu’u to Hawaii Kai Shack
Stage II Short Course Hawaii Kai Triangle to Shack (~4-5 miles)

Sunday March 6th — Stage III10:00am - Stage III Long Course Makapu’u to Anuenue*
Stage III Short Course Hawaii Kai to Anuenue * First finishers expected at approx. 12:30 p.m.
SUP, Paddlboard, V1, V6 will be held on Sunday with Stage III at 10:00am from Hawaii Kai to Anuenue.

The race is open to the public and provides a “short-course” option for all levels of experience

What started off as a cold and cloudy San Diego morning, ended up being a fun and successful paddling event. The annual Tecolote 5000 Canoe/Kayak/SUP/ Paddleboard race benefits the non-profit Toys for Tots as well as a fundraiser for the local San Diego Canoe/Kayak Team. A solid turnout of about 150 competiotrs took to the chilly San Diego waters. The SDCKT is a Olympic Development program that helps kids reach their dream of Junior/Senior National Team nominations.

Vertra Sunscreen athlete Danny Ching from California ventured down with his crew from Redondo Beach to support this local event. Pat and Ryan Dolan the brothers out of Hawaii were also in California attending a 2 week National Team preparation camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.

Vertra Sunscreen’s Ryan and Patrick Dolan head to the Pan American Championships

Honolulu, Hawaii (October 5, 2010) Vertra Sunscreen’s Ryan and Patrick Dolan, brothers from Kailua, are heading to Mexico City for the 2010 Pan American Championships for Canoe and Kayak.  The races begin October 7th in Mexico City.

Consistent with all major international events sanctioned by the ICF (International Canoe Federation) these Pan American Championships are of the upmost importance to the USA Canoe/ Kayak National Team. “It is crucial that we place top 5 in the respective events that we enter” says Ryan.  This is one of the first steps to qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games. The Dolans brothers must place top 5 at this event.  If they fail to do so, they will not be eligible to compete at the 2nd chance Olympic qualifier in 2011.

At the 2011 ICF World Championships, athletes will receive an automatic birth into the 2012 Olympic Games if they place top 10 in any individual event and top 6 in a teamed event. Teams consist of 2 or 4 athletes in a single boat.   Those athletes who do not qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games at the 2011 ICF World Championships, will be eligible to compete at the “2nd chance qualifier” if they placed top 5 at this years Pan American Games.

Ryan Dolan will be competing in the Following Events:

  • ·      K1 500 Meters

  • ·      K1 200 Meters

  • ·      K2 200 Meters

Patrick Dolan will be competing in the following events:

  • ·      K2 1000 Meters

  • ·    K4 1000 Meters

We are both excited to be racing internationally again,” commented Pat. Earlier this season, the Dolans competed together. At this event however, Ryan will be racing in a single boat, while Pat teams up with fellow National Team athlete Morgan House of Georgia.  “This will be the first time I race an international event in the K1 500 Meters” commented Ryan, “it’ll be competitive, but I am looking forward to the challenge.”

Local Boys prepare for US National Team Trials

Dolan Brothers prepare for USA Canoe/Kayak Team Trials

The 2010 USA Team Trials for Canoe and Kayaking take place this Saturday and Sunday at the Olympic Training Center, in Chula Vista, California. The top athletes from around the country will be represented this year, all competing for the top eight spots. Pat and Ryan Dolan from Kailua, Hawaii will be racing individually and as a team in these trials.

The Dolan Brothers have been training all winter in Hawaii in preparation for the USA Team Trials. They arrived back at the Olympic Training Center the first week of April, to reconnect and start training with their teammates from last year. Pat mentioned, “We want to prove that training in Hawaii is good and that we can get on the podium doing it Hawaiian Style.” Hawaii has been the breeding ground for many of the top paddlers in the world. “It’s comforting to train at home with friends and family and support of the Hawaii paddling community,” Ryan added. Through the Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team (HCKT) Ryan and Patrick have been able to continue their mission to achieve their Olympic Dreams.

Theese trials mark the first round of qualifications for the Dolan Brothers. This weekend Pat and Ryan will be racing individually (K1), in a double (K2) and in a 4-person boat (k4.) Pat commented, “It’s fun to race with other guys…it makes me go harder.” After these trials, Pat and Ryan will be headed off to Europe for the 3 World Cups and the World Championships at the end of August.

Last year the International Canoe Federation (IFC) changed the Olympic racing program by eliminating all 500-meter events and in its place adding 200-meter events. Previously athletes raced 1000 and 500 meter distances. With the new rule change, athletes will have to specialize more as a sprinter in the 200-meter or an endurance based athlete in the 1000-meter races.

The Dolan Brothers are on a mission. To focus the next two years leading up to the London Games in 2012, by making the fastest K4 possible. “We want to win a medal, and I believe we have the guys to do it,” Pat added. Ryan and Pat are excited to get the season underway after a long but successful winter training season in Hawaii. “Were strong and fit,” Ryan added, and were ready to race!

Progression of events:

Saturday April 24th

  • 500 meter Heats/Finals (Non-olympic event)
  • 1000 meter Heats/Finals
  • K4 (4-person boat) Trials
Sunday April 24th
  • 200 meter Heats/Finals
  • K4 (4-person boat) Trials
