Dolan Brothers-Tops at Local Paddling Race

Vertra Sunscreen's Dolan Brothers (Ryan & Patrick) are among Hawaii's top Outrigger/Surfski/ K1 paddlers.  In preparation for the 2012 London Olympic Games, the Dolan Brothers are continuing their training at home, in the warm waters of Hawaii, under the strategic coaching of Guy Wilding. "We love Hawaii, and we enjoy training at our local kayaking club (HCKT)," commented Ryan.  Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team (HCKT) is an Olympic Development Program designed to elevate Hawaii's elite paddling athletes to be competitive on the world scale. Ryan and Patrick have been USACK National Team Members since 2006.

This past weekend Patrick Dolan took top honors in the Surfski Divison of the PA'A race from Makapu'u to Pinky's Cannal. Ryan took 6th in the OC1 Divison.

What started off as a cold and cloudy San Diego morning, ended up being a fun and successful paddling event. The annual Tecolote 5000 Canoe/Kayak/SUP/ Paddleboard race benefits the non-profit Toys for Tots as well as a fundraiser for the local San Diego Canoe/Kayak Team. A solid turnout of about 150 competiotrs took to the chilly San Diego waters. The SDCKT is a Olympic Development program that helps kids reach their dream of Junior/Senior National Team nominations.

Vertra Sunscreen athlete Danny Ching from California ventured down with his crew from Redondo Beach to support this local event. Pat and Ryan Dolan the brothers out of Hawaii were also in California attending a 2 week National Team preparation camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.

Team Hawaii landed in Tahiti a few days ago for another crack at the annual Hawaiki Nui race. A prestigious race held in the Leeward islands of Tahiti. The event is a three stage canoe race starting on the Island of Huahine. From Huahine athletes will race to the island of Raiatea. The final leg will begin on Raiatea and end on Bora Bora. Canoe paddlers will navigate roughly 80 miles (130km) over three days. Racing beings on Wednesday.

A little late, but none the less still amazing pictures taken by the rising paddling star Jack Bark. He snapped some great photos of the paddling field including those of Vertra's own Brian Rocheleau and Eric Abbott. Rocheleau paddled to an impressive 2nd place finish in this year's Catalina Classic. Abbott after his win at the 2010 Molokai World Championships, took 5th place at the Classic. The crossing is known for being an extremely tough event, and this year proved to be no different with slight head wind and tough currents. Enjoy some of the pictures taken by Jack Bark.

Vertra's Dolan Brothers find Success at the 2010 Pan American Championships!

::FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:: Dolan Brothers Perform in Mexico City Honolulu, Hawaii (October 10, 2010)-- The Dolan brothers had a successful showing at the Pan American Championships in Mexico City over the weekend, helping qualify three spots for next years Pan American Games, which will serve as a second chance qualifier for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Kailua's Patrick Dolan and Gainsville's Morgan House placed fifth in the final of the K2 1000m, while Ryan Dolan took third in the K1 500m and 200m finals. The Pan American Games marks the end of the competitive sprint kayaking season for the brothers, who are looking forward to their off season. In November, Patrick will be competing in Hawaiki Nui, an outrigger paddling event in Tahiti covering almost 70 miles in three days, while Ryan looks forward to the upcoming surfski and OC1 races this fall. The brothers won't have to race again until the U.S. National Team Trials to be held sometime in spring of 2011, which is the first step of  many in a long and important year for the boys, which will ultimately determine if the qualify for the 2012 Olympics. Vertra Sunscreen Dominates Battle of the Paddle- California

Dana Point, California (October 3, 2010) Vertra Sunscreen’s paddlesports team dominates at the 2010 Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle event at Doheny Beach, California.  Amongst the world’s best standup paddlers, Vertra’s athletes shined above the rest in both the elite surf and distance paddling races.

Vertra Sunscreen athlete Danny Ching, continued in his normal fashion of being nothing less than perfect at these events. Not only did Ching champion both the surf race and distance races at the BOP event in Hawaii earlier this year, he as well took the crown in both events this past weekend. “It’s a great event,” commented Ching. “I train and race hard, I was fortunate this weekend to come up on top.”

Vertra’s other athletes performed top notch as well.  The Australian Travis Grant finished in 4^th in the elite surf race. “Tough and Spectacular,” commented Grant after the event. Travis battled with three other athletes for the entire race, trading leads and navigating the waist to chest high waves. The fifteen year-old Matt Becker edged his way into a 9^th place in the surf race. “I am proud of the way I paddled this weekend,” mentioned Becker. “With so many top athletes present, it is a dog fight from start to finish.”

Both Ching and Grant will be traveling back to the Hawaiian Islands this coming weekend to compete in the 2010 Molokai Hoe outrigger canoe race. Danny will be racing with Team Primo, an elite mix of paddlers. Grant has organized a team comprised of all Australians.
