 Santa Cruz, California (March 19th 2011) Vertra Sunscreen's Matt Becker takes the win at the 2011 Surftech SUP event in Santa Cruz this weekend!  The 6-mile elite race course was held in less than optimal conditions for the athletes, with wind gusts up to 20 MPH and near freezing water temps. Athletes had to battle all the elements just to finish.  Becker one of Vertra's youngest paddlesports athletes took top honors over Dan Gavere and Anthony Vela. "It was tough for sure out there today," commented Becker "you just had to push hard up wind, than surf your way back to the finish." Vela and Becker battled each other most of the race. "My Joe Bark 12'6 Competitor SUP board was incredible on the downwind portion of the race" added Becker. Vertra Sunscreen's Danny Ching and Lauren Bartlett took top honors at the 2011 Koa Nui Championships last weekend. Pat Dolan winner of last years Koa Nui Title took third followed by Maui's Kai Bartlett (two-time Koa Nui Winner). Scott Gamble rounded out the elite field of paddlers in 10th! "It was great to see Vertra's paddlers perform this weekend," commented Vertra's President Bobby Higa.  This event is a precursor to the 2011 Steinlager OC1 World Championships coming up at the end of the month.

Congrats to Vertra's Kai Lenny for winning the 2011 Sunset Pro! In a dominating fashion, Lenny won all of his preceding heats leading up to the final. In a 4-man heat, Lenny battled fellow Maui boy Zane Schweitzer, as well as Peyo Lizarazu and Robbin Johnston. Kai won the final by 1 point over Johnston.

Vertra’s  Travis Grant Leads Outrigger Australia to a National Title

Gold Coast, Australia (February 7^th, 2011) Vertra Sunscreen’s Travis Grant confirmed his reputation of  being one of the most dominant ocean paddlers in Australia by winning the Australian National Outrigger Title this past weekend. Hailing from the Gold Coast, Grant was the outright winner in the AOCRA National Title 500m OC1 sprints. Claiming the gold medal at Coomera Lake, Grant smashed the final heat by 4 seconds over club mate Leo Young.

“The sprint championships has always been one race that eluded me so it is certainly good to finally add the Australian Gold medal to the collection,” Grant explained after the event. After his win in the OC1, Grants then steered the Outrigger Australian six-man canoe to a National Championship.

Grant in the past 6 months has racked up a long list of elite accomplishments. It does not seem to matter which ocean craft he paddles, Grant manages to finish on top. Earlier this year Grant finished 2^nd overall in the Battle of the Paddle elite standup race in Honolulu, Hawaii. “I love the ocean and I love to compete,” Grant commented “I am fortunate enough to get to travel and race around the world.” In the coming months Travis will head back to Hawaii for the OC1 World Championships.

As a Massachusetts native, Gibree’s passion and success in the paddling world was cultivated form her experiences working as a lifeguard in Cape Cod. Prone Paddling, swimming, surfing and competing at lifeguard events shaped Gibree into the ocean force she is today. “I’m excited to be apart of the Vertra team,” commented Gibree “I have used the product for years when lifeguarding, surfing, SUPing, instructing, and anything else in the ocean!” Now living in San Diego, Gillian has decided to share her love for beach fitness and overall health through her company Paddle Into Fitness.

Dolan Brothers-Tops at Local Paddling Race

Vertra Sunscreen's Dolan Brothers (Ryan & Patrick) are among Hawaii's top Outrigger/Surfski/ K1 paddlers.  In preparation for the 2012 London Olympic Games, the Dolan Brothers are continuing their training at home, in the warm waters of Hawaii, under the strategic coaching of Guy Wilding. "We love Hawaii, and we enjoy training at our local kayaking club (HCKT)," commented Ryan.  Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team (HCKT) is an Olympic Development Program designed to elevate Hawaii's elite paddling athletes to be competitive on the world scale. Ryan and Patrick have been USACK National Team Members since 2006.

This past weekend Patrick Dolan took top honors in the Surfski Divison of the PA'A race from Makapu'u to Pinky's Cannal. Ryan took 6th in the OC1 Divison.
